Memcached was invented by the clever folks who run LiveJournal - it's daemon that you can use to store objects into memory.. and have these automagically expire. -- very handy.

We used it extensively to make Mobile Number Portability work. (storing which network a phone number is on today, so you don't need to look it up again for another hour or so)
